Northbrook conflict over Life Time Fitness project

The Northbrook Village Board Tuesday night approved the Life Time Fitness-anchored project for a property where multiple attempts at development have failed. The mixed-use project will be located at 1000 Skokie Blvd., and will feature a 304-unit Finger Companies apartment complex, a 43,000-square-foot Children's Learning Adventure day care and enrichment center, and a 91,000-square-foot fitness club. Some trustees and the Village President, Sandy Frum, voted against it. One declared that Northbrook already had fitness centers, day cares, and a just-finished 347-unit apartment building a few blocks to the north. This project, she said, was superfluous. Another tried to postpone the vote by proposing studies on traffic, parking, and marketing to see if there was enough demand for the proposed apartments. Beam Suntory Moves to Chicago

Beam Suntory is one of a growing number of companies that is moving from suburbs to city. Beam Suntory Inc. headquartered in Deerfield, was launched on October 3, 2011 as merely Beam Inc. after it tore itself away from its former Fortune Brands holding company to focus solely on one product. The company sells spirits - bourbon whiskey, tequila, Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, Canadian whisky, vodka, cognac, rum, cordials - and ready-to-drink pre-mixed cocktails. Brands range the world from Jim Beam bourbon to Japan's Yamazaki single-malt whiskey.  Other products include Maker's Mark and Knob Creek bourbon, Canadian Club whiskey and Kakubin, Hakushu and Hibiki whiskeys, and Courvoisier cognac. On January 13, 2014, Suntory acquired Beam for $16 billion so Beam changed its name to "Beam Suntory." Today, the $4 billion company claims it has the "soul of a start-up" and thrives on profits from double-digits sales that were produced last [...]

New Psychiatric Hospital in Northbrook?

Chicago Behavioral Hospital, a for-profit psychiatric hospital,  that is run by US HealthVest, a behavioral healthcare firm, plans to extend to Northbrook in summer 2017.   USVest explained to the Illinois health planning agency that there is greater need for inpatient mental health services in the north and northwest suburbs than where it is presently located, in Des Plaines. It  proposes to renovate a three-story office building on Lake Cook Road, near the intersection of Interstates 94 and 294, into a 100-bed facility at a cost of $31.3 million.   The company bought the the 125-bed Maryville hospital for $22.6 million in November 2014 and instantly ran into problems. Demand was so high and renovation ongoing that the hospital had to turn away 672 people last year since it only had 78 beds available. The number of beds has slightly increased but popular demand, their application reported, exceeds space.   [...]

According to the Tax Foundation, Illinois pays the second highest property tax in the nation. And there are some  counties, the real estate website Smart Asset documented, that pay more than others. Each state has its own formula . Some states pay higher taxes because they don't collect  state income tax. Other states like Illinois and New Jersey  bundle property taxes among other hefty taxes and ramp the charge. In Illinois, the median property tax is about $3,507 for a house that costs $202,200, or 1.73 percent of the property’s assessed fair market value - depending on where you live. More recently Reboot Illinois used a Smart Asset report and listed the top 25 counties with the highest Illinois property tax rates. Here are the top ten: DuPage County, IL: Median Home Value: $286,500; Median Annual Property Tax Payment: $6,115 Champaign County, IL: Median Home Value: $149,500; Median Annual Property [...]
